Major Flaw Found in SSL Encryption for Online Shopping

The Internet Engineering Task Force has warned about a zero day flow in the SSL protocol that encrypts the communication between computers.  The SSL layer is what encrypts your private information such as credit card number, address and other private data about you.  The reason why this is such a major issue is that it is a zero day flaw.  A zero day flaw means that flaw is currently being exploited in the wild and that is why it is critical it gets fixed ASAP.  The risk to people who make purchases online is slim because to take advantage of this flaw you must have a highly advanced understand of how computers and programing.  Over the next couple of week you will start to see patches for Internet Explorer, Firefox and all servers that have internet connections.  When the patches are released all internet users will need to download them immediately to assure a high level of computer security.

FBI Arrest 53 in Phishing Scam

Well here we go again another phishing scam leading to bank accounts being compromised.  We here at Internet Safety Center can’t stress enough to never click on links inside emails especially from Banks.  Again, Never Never Never click on links inside emails from Banks, Credit Card or other Financial Institutions.  The websites and emails look legit but are really fake and designed to get user names, passwords and other private information.  Please read our guide on How to Spot a Phishing Email/Website.

New InternetSafetyCenter Coming Soon

I just wanted to inform everybody that a new Internet Safety Center will be released in the next couple of weeks.  We have been working around the clock on updating the content on the website along with creating new content.  We are going to vastly expanding our Identity Theft section and Computer Security sections.  We are also creating two new sections to the website Kids Corner and How to.  The Kid’s Corner will have information on some of the best websites for kids for education and some great kids friendly internet browsers.  The “How to” section of the website will contain videos on product reviews and How to do certain things.  Some of the How to video that will be released in the next month will be How to Backup your email for Outlook, Outlook contacts, Internet Favorites and more.  If you have suggestion for How to video please email us at howto@internetsafetycenter.com.

New Trojan Stealing Your Bank Account Informatiom and Money

A new trojan spreading across the internet is designed to steal your bank account information and money.  This new trojan will infect IE 6, 7, 8, Firefox and Opera running on Windows.  This new trojan obtains your username and password of your bank account and then starts to withdraw money from your accounts.  What makes this trojan so dangerous is that it creates a fake webpage that displays your bank account information as if nothing was missing but in reality your money is being withdrawn. This kind of trojan will start to be common place in the near future as more computer users don’t protect themselves.  Computer security is critical to anybody access the internet and everybody should have spyware software installed.  If you are doing online banking then spyware software is even more critical to computer security.

It is the second Tuesday of the month and Microsoft has released several critical patches.  One of the patches is a zero-day patches means that criminals have been exploiting the vulnerability.  Remember that installing the latest patches from Microsoft is the first step in computer safety and security.

A new virus described as providing naked pictures of an ESPN commentator is spreading rapidly across the internet.  If you get an email about naked pictures of Erin Andrews don’t open it.  You will get a virus and not pictures.

Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Microsoft has released service pack 2 for Windows Vista as a critical update this month.  The update will take about 30 minutes to an hour to install.

The Internet isn’t a friendly place for kids.  It is full of pedophiles and cyberbullying.  The best thing for parent is to talk to their children and ask them if someone they don’t know has asked to talk to them.  Parent also need to talk about social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace.  You should ask your children if you can see their page or even ask them how to use the site.  The more you understand how to use the site the better advice you can provide.  Don’t worry about your own computer security today talk to your kids and make sure they are safe.

Internet Safety Center Run Microsoft Malicious Removal Tool

Microsoft has released a tool that is designed to remove malicious software from your computer.  To run the tool go to start > run > and type in mrt.exe.  Follow the steps and run a full system scan.  The scan will take several hours to run so running it before you go to bed is the best option.  This will remove viruses like Conficker and other threats.
